Word/Term Definition
[ R ]
RC4 RC4 is a symmetrical encryption algorithm. It is a cipher that was originally authored by Ron Rivest for RSA.
Remote Access Service Remote Access Service (i.e., RAS) offers a number of security measures including the ability to lock out user accounts after a number of unsuccessful login attempts, the ability to use encrypted authentication protocols such as the Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (i.e., CHAP) or the more secure Microsoft-CHAP version (i.e., MS-CHAP), and lastly RAS can use a variety of communication protocols.
Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (i.e., RADIUS) is a client/server protocol that authorizes and authenticates users connecting to a network. Its design revolves around a centralized database. It is also noteworthy that RADIUS is more popular then Terminal Access Controller Access Control System (i.e., TACACS) because it provides better authentication security.
Reverse Imaging Reverse imaging is the forensic process of imaging a drive, bit by bit, in reverse (i.e., from end to beginning versus the traditional process of beginning to end). The idea behind this technique is that the process of reverse imaging disables disk caching and allows for the possible acquisition of bad sectors or at least more of the content of bad sectors than what traditional imaging allows for.

Rivest, Shamir, and Adleman Rivest, Shamir, and Adleman (i.e., RSA) is an asymmetric encryption scheme and as such does not use a shared secret key, but rather a private and a public key. As of April, 2007, it was believed to be the most widely-used commercial asymmetric algorithm.

Role-Based Access Control An Role-Based Access Control system (i.e., RBAC), provides for the defining of permissions and priveges based on a user's position or role within a given environment without using labels like Mandatory Access Control.
Rotation of Duties The concept of Rotation of Duties ensures that duties and tasks can be performed by more than a single, individual user.
Router A Router operates at the Network Layer (e.g., level 3) of the Open Systems Interconnect (i.e., OSI) model and is used to route traffic between networks.
